Plan Your VisitThe SMMJA is home to the world’s largest collection of work by Jewish-Hungarian painter Theodore Fried. Fried fled occupied Europe for the United States in1942, leaving much of his work behind, hidden from the Nazis. He continued to work as an artist in New York and elsewhere for the rest of his life, and retrieved his hidden work in the 1950s and 1970s. This exhibition showcases some of his work that survived the war and is now housed in our permanent collection.
